Patrick Ames - The Virtualistics II - Stereo Stickman

Patrick Ames The Virtualistics II

-

From an extensive back catalogue of songs written from a place of needing to make sense of the world and simultaneously escape from it, long-time songwriter Patrick Ames has compiled a four-track EP of recent highlights, and the songs are both stylistically and conceptually engaging from start to finish.

The Virtualistics II observes and analyses the world, with short and clever reflections woven into catchy blues-rock tunes and grooves organic and timeless.

Consider the country swagger and honest musical layout of He Lies – an infectious jam of a track, but also confronting and provocative by nature; a topical dose of realism that suits the sultry swagger of the guitar, bass and drums combination.

“I feel compelled to write about what’s happening & do my duty & participate.” – Patrick Ames.

Combining poetry and song has been a key trait of the Patrick Ames sound lately, and here we get something equally well-versed, mildly comical, but mostly thought-provoking and boldly relevant.

I Saw Your Bra Strap is a fine example of precisely that unique pairing of qualities. Another low-key funky groove, keys and colours guiding a mellow voice through intriguing and frankly unsettling lyrics.

After this, contrast is powerful – the sudden intimate fireside acoustic song I Know Everything is tired, in both performance and tone, and the lyrics and melody reach for the heart, whilst provoking thought in a clever, Dylan-esque fashion. This song stops things quite suddenly – stops you in your tracks, slows things down, and prompts deeper thought.

Finally, political and topical observations reach peak contemplation, passion, and funk, for the energetic sweeping statements and scenes of A Billion Buys. All too often our unnecessary billionaires are looked up to, almost as Godlike, but there’s a painful reality to their roles, which needs much more attention. A Billion Buys dreamily and memorably shines light on this truth. The song is a definite highlight, something like Johnny Cash in vocal style, but retro electronic funk and trip hop in production.

A superb way to wrap up the four protest signs or billboards that make up The Virtualistics II.
