Pat Donnelly’s return this season brings a colourful fusion of old-school emo rock and euphoric synth pop.
Carved out of a riff-led ambiance that’s arena-ready at its peak, Walls presents a kind of fast-paced Coldplay aura in some ways, but in others, we’re in a completely personal realm of storytelling and reflection – with a distinct and intimate to impassioned vocal confidently leading the way.
Unexpectedly structured but effective, things shift at around the half-way point for a more anthemic pop-punk take on the format, and still that underlying colourful chaos and ambiance rains down with purpose – and a sort of distinct warmth to immerse its audience.
‘Won’t let go until you say so’ resounds and repeats, alongside that recognisable riff, and as the music settles in to the long-term memory, the song’s underlying sense of emotional complexity and unrequited love connects all the more intensely.
