A dash of Pearl Jam, a touch of Classic British Rock, a few hints of vibrato and a stunning use of contrast – Ibiza ’98 from the UK’s own NEVERMAN is a superb new single, and a brilliant taste of what’s to come from their upcoming EP.
Take the style alone and this is easy to escape into alternative rock. The band build layers around you, from delicacy to weight, mellow whispers to explosive outbursts and fast-paced deliveries alike. Combine this though, with the inherent story-telling – the intrigue of the title, the personal intimacy and vulnerability on display. The single effectively creates its own realm, drawing you in with equal parts distortion, rhythm, riffs, melody, and poetic intention. And that poetry is beautiful, simple yet effective; interesting, provocative. Short lines pave the way, the music backs up this progression, then you get the full-on unity of the drop to the hook – and Matt McGowan’s vocals more than carry the weight of this evolution.
Conceptually thoughtful writing, appearing to touch on the battles waged in our minds, NEVERMAN tackle the complex feelings of contemporary life in a seemingly simple yet ultimately engaging, energizing manner.
A fantastic single, from a band with a refreshing sound that’s hopefully set to help re-build the live-show and festival scenes throughout 2020 and beyond.
