Nathan Kelly - Jester - Stereo Stickman

Nathan Kelly Jester

-

Jazz Pianist and composer Nathan Kelly highlights the intricate and expressive nature of his musicality, with the distinct and organic single Jester (two pianos).

From his 2024 project The Concert Album, Jester (two pianos) follows an intimate dance between precisely the implied two parts of the process. We begin with a jazz-like meandering of high and tentative notes, a sort of playful introduction, before hits of drama and depth later pour into the performance. All the while, the energy remains aptly quirky, this idea of the Jester quite finely represented, and the music all the while holding close to its artistic intentions.

Noting momentary bursts of bigger-band energy as the pianist expands into bigger chord sounds and rhythms, Jester still maintains its ambient integrity and purpose at all times. The performance is impressive, without a doubt, but this is not the first thing to grab attention. The music rightfully feels like a relaxing theatrical ode to a story or physical presentation, a perfectly captured image of exactly what inspired the title, and that self-awareness and consistency helps the natural dynamic and playful evolution of Jester (two pianos) connect and engage with its audience, right the way through.
