Following the strength of an initially memorable hook, the track feels contemporary by design but also refreshingly emotional. The hook starts things off on a mainstream thread of recognisable expression and intrigue united, before the verses meander with an entirely freestyle, unpredictable flow, through various stages of the story and these revealing scenes both personal and observational.
Always we resolve back to this sentiment of trying to figure out what’s going on – not so much the tune, not a pop-like structure, but more the idea and wonder. The process is considering the self, whilst incorporating just enough modern references to the climb and street life in order to feel relevant for a broader audience.
The uncommon aspect that is the questioning nature of the concept, along with the passionate delivery and melancholic tune, all helps give What’s Going On a clear edge of identity. It will be interesting to hear where else creativity takes Munch in the coming months.
