The Convalescent is a brand new EP that brings together a collection of finely crafted, chill-hop style beats and soundscapes – offering audiences a notably eclectic, instrumental journey through thought and feeling. These are the qualities you take away after hearing just the opening couple of tracks, and things continue to gather momentum and keep you on your toes throughout.
Rather than taking to the usual or more common method of finding a loop or two that work, Mr. Faia makes certain to always drive with artistic interest and awareness. These are beats that could well be collaborated with, but at the same time – they are categorically strong enough to stand the test of time as musical escapism in themselves.
The artist Mr. Faia is an active duty service member – he crafted this project during recovery time after being injured in service. There’s a certain sense of isolated dedication to the EP in hindsight, rightfully reflecting a sincere and dedicated focus on the art-form. The result is a playlist that’s as professionally bright as it is creatively impressive.
From How We Live through Hazordous Duty, the mood changes, the details and intricacies vary and evolve in unique ways, but still you get to trust in the professionalism and skill of the creator. There’s a cinematic quality to much of the music, allowing it to be either your calming end of the week playlist, or something to have running in the background as you go about a busy work day.
What makes these tracks all the more interesting is that behind the scenes story – there’s depth to each composition, a thought process and a series of emotions; the titles hint at these and each piece works hard to represent them at every step. Help! (I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!) is a fine example of this.
Whether the moment requires a smooth and subtle approach, or something with a little more grit and weight – Mr. Faia more than meets the bar. A pleasure to listen through in full – a skillful producer, hopefully with plenty more music to come.
