Lo-fi jazz keys and freely expressive vocals meander through stages of near spoken-word melodies and falsetto peaks – Marvin Bloo leads with a nostalgic trip-hop minimalism and loving contemplations, for the three-track EP Love Letter Pt. 1.
As an introduction to the unconfined style of the project, Cloud’s Interlude stands tall on the strength of its message, its original design and structure, and the warmth of its tone. The track marks a unique and somewhat unpredictable opener, but the effect of this is that your focus is on the words, the voice, the overall feel, and that seems a perfect direction, given the heartfelt subject matter.
Things quickly switch up a few notches for the second track. EXP injects a tempo and boldness that naturally elevate things towards hip hop and soul-rock. It’s a full soundscape, a sublime performance, leaning between rap and RnB, achieving a kind of playful Bruno Mars, Tyler or Pharrell aura. Then we get the Kendrick flow during the verse. But it’s another lo-fi soul-pop production, slightly more full-band by nature, and all-in-all presenting a clear depiction of the performative flair, versatility, and passion that comes from all things Marvin Bloo.
Wrapping things up, eclecticism rings loud again, but the mood and intentions hold true to this idea of a Loveletter. The title-track is intimate and acoustic, a guitar strum and an almost adlibbed soulful vocal presenting another beautifully crafted and impressively original song. Echoes of additional voice bring warmth and unity, a sense of togetherness that’s again in keeping with the theme, and the beat has something of a yesteryear tumble to it – further enhancing the timeless embrace of this finely-crafted collection.
Marvin Bloo engages, entertains, and impresses. These songs are welcoming and professionally put together, but more importantly, their creativity shines brightly; with lashings of individual character. Loveletter Pt. 1 is a must hear, and part two should be eagerly anticipated.
