Emerging soaked in soul and auto-tune in equal parts, Lil Laddin’s full-length project Greatest Of All Slime is one that skillfully balances emotive soundscapes and storytelling, with a decidedly contemporary, relevant overall vibe and attitude.
From the quick, short rhymes and dreamlike ambiance of Intro, through the anthem-like energy of tracks like Addies and Woah, there are as many moments of personal insight as there are of a more vague, accessible and modern origin. The whole thing sounds fit to grace the hip hop landscape of these final moments from 2019, and at the same time, it works well to introduce the vocal tone, writing style and intentions of a hard-working New York artist.
There’s a lightness to many of the tracks that makes them easy to escape into. And that hint of soul, this balance between melody and rap, builds further on that effect.
