Lauren Alex Hooper Too Much And Not Enough, Vol. 1

The bold and brilliant elevation of neuro-divergent thoughts and experiences – a colourful and evocative indie-pop lane, redirected by a clear sense of individuality and depth that’s impressively nuanced. UK songwriter and artist Lauren Alex Hooper gets fearlessly vulnerable and honest, with the unique melodies, emotions, and stories, of her EP Too Much And Not Enough.

As an introduction to the introspective and revealing poetry of this project, Armour is superb – a relatable resolve proving inclusive and melodically satisfying, with deeper-seeking verses that shine a more specific light on the intricacies and weight of living with autism.

The song beautifully and poignantly reflects on the familiar concept of masking, and leads with an alternative pop energy that’s accessible and interesting. It’s a fantastic opening anthem, and Eye To Eye follows with a mildly more melancholic look at the difficulty of making or maintaining eye contact; in a world that predominantly expects it.

Wonderful songwriting, engaging and timeless by style and melody, then all the more fascinating, endearing, and insightful, from a conceptual perspective. If the songwriter’s role is to connect, to bridge the gap and compel their audience to think more deeply on something, as well as to provide essential escapism from the darkness of the world, then this is a job done with precision and grace. A pleasure to listen through.
