Musically inspired by JS BACH and Benedetto Marcello, Minuet 5.0 features a solo piano thread descending under vocal harmonies and a softly spoken poem about children.
The piece begins with horror and desolation, moving into simpler images just briefly, before returning to the risk and dangers that lie ahead. Meanwhile the piano-part consistently evolves and shifts, the descending pattern now taking on a mind of its own for something more chaotic and desperate, as these words, still spoken with a strangely calming demeanour, continue to strike up heart-breaking emotions and contemplations that feel decidedly poignant in today’s world.
Less than two minutes in full and another uniquely distinct ode to the Ivano Bersini niche, Minuet 5.0 is captivating, haunting and unsettling, but it’s also beautiful, organic, and honest. The work is a vast and confronting, universally relevant ode to humanity and its uncertain future, and proves theatrical and bold yet minimalist and intimate all at once.
With words delivered again by Stephanie Rodriguez M, Minuet 5.0 repeats the word ‘children’ throughout, forever reinforcing the innocence at the heart of the writing, and thus heavily juxtaposing this innocence and love with the shattering darkness and devastation of a polluted and desperately broken world.
