One of the only rappers of late to quickly captivate for his framing of bars, vocal clarity and focused storytelling above all else, Gq the Prince showcases strength of lyric and delivery in line with a somewhat minimal production-style and concept; celebrating the natural weight of hip hop, without all the filler and falseness.
Featuring a fully professional set of visuals and a somewhat classic hip hop beat of simple chords and melodic fragments, 20/20 feels initially like an ode to hard work over relationships. However, as the bars pour through we see clear references to the passion of the process, to family and the climb, to values and to the good times in equal parts.
The whole lyrical progression grips unexpectedly, and overpowers the music and implications in an impressive way.
Gq the Prince can rap, no doubt about it, and there’s a nostalgic tone to his style and his writing, the wordplay and purpose of each bar, that appeals for its well-rooted influence and contemporary take alike.
Hopefully there’s plenty more music to come.
