Thoughtfully combining the true stories of the past with musical influences once borders apart, now seamlessly united, Munich’s Gleis 11 promise an addictive and organic example of collaboration at its most creative and engaging, and Auf der Welt is a brilliantly catchy ode to that.
Playfully blending nostalgia and originality, the band’s sound seeks to encapsulates the manner in which Turkish and German cultures have become intertwined over the years. Their songs are inspired by the Turkish guest workers who came to be employed in Germany during the sixties and seventies, and the stories and psychedelic, swirling rock arrangements alike reinforce the concept and mood of this time.
Auf der Welt is a fine example of that approach, an intoxicating fusion of organic and warped instrumental layers, with a marching rhythm and bold German vocal adding a kind of anthemic rise and fall that again feels rather classic in its depiction of Germany’s biggest sounds.
The two worlds collide beautifully here, a world-music fusion that’s uplifting and energising, and a fairly instant melodic earworm and synth riff – both of which linger in the mind indefinitely.
For the latter half, we enter a completely new territory, this intensified dance production letting instrumental prowess unite the psychedelic and the rhythmically definitive, for an enchanting middle-8 that beautifully elevates the Gleis 11 style and appeal all the more so.
