Leading with a boldly unique sonic experience, thoughtful songwriter and vocalist Frygian delivers an enchanting alternative pop release, with the scenes and sentiments of Weltschmerz.
Brought forth by way of a mellow pulsating bass and synth ambiance, Weltschmerz misdirects its listeners somewhat, later presenting a quiet and distinct, softly-spoken vocal, and personal reflections or introspections inspired by a period of insomnia.
The melody has a structure that’s as unique as the production, not quite folk but something mildly theatrical, rhythmic, and later almost falsetto. Then we get this organic string section, another twist of identity, helping further elevate the fiercely recognisable yet divinely delicate sound of Frygian.
It’s a huge moment of vulnerability, subtly meandering between the likes of Imogen Heap and Depeche Mode to an extent, with a hint of Rusted Root to the jitter of the performance. In short though, Frygian captures his own sound and style with this, a genuine moment of artistry, unpredictable and captivating. It’s an intriguing and immersive introduction to his music.
