Somewhat theatrical but rooted amidst a likable pop format that rises and falls, My Moon starts off the Nighttime Chronicles EP on a bold and beautiful high. Then as we move into You’re The Reason Why, the quirky shuffle of the set-up leans more notably towards simple folk-pop and intimate, romantic songwriting. Still the energy rises, and the structure is impactful – building towards a huge crescendo during the latter half.
Ghost then strips things back to the bare essentials, a piano-led ballad in which Esteban’s voice lays down its unique and evocative nuances in a profound and moving fashion. It’s a central trait of this project, that versatile and effective voice, accessible and honest. Consider the subsequent shift into a dance-pop realm for All Night Long – an entirely different musicality, an arena-ready celebration of love, and still that Esteban voice is distinct and recognisable within it.
Summer Nights employs the same kind of euphoric dance-pop design, and highlights the songwriting prowess of Esteban, with short lines and rising passion leading us with uplifting warmth towards the brighter drop of the hook.
Esteban’s versatility is brilliant throughout these six tracks. Grounded yet eclectic songwriting makes for a consistently likeable collection.
The project wraps up with a sudden dose of theatrical rock and anthemic writing once again, as Red Lightning – Nighttime Version injects perhaps the album’s most addictive and memorable ear-worm, and a song that naturally draws you right into the centre of its emotion and power.
The effort and skill that has gone into the crafting of Nighttime Chronicles is undeniable, Esteban blends professionalism and passion in an impressive way, and the songs offer plenty of timeless and genuine moments combined.
