Daya Midori - Rebound - Stereo Stickman

Daya Midori Rebound

-

Beautifully crisp production blends the sublime intimacy of acoustic guitar fingerpicking with a lightly ambient RnB soundscape. Daya Midori then completes the set-up, with divinely delicate but again cleanly mixed vocals, as we fall under the enchanting spell of Rebound.

Somewhat breathy and light yet impassioned as it meanders through these long-form reflections on an uncertain relationship, Rebound features subtle changes in style and influence, almost leaning towards hip hop and trap on occasion. Always we return to the fluidity and honesty of the lyrics and voice though, this hook resolve that satisfies the whole progression, and the music that maintains a sense of calm and groove alongside it.

Balancing softness and grit by way of lyrics that feel occasionally scornful and empowered, Rebound is notably genuine in its relaying of the topic – that implied depth of connection, the illusion of love, that often comes with being someone’s Rebound.

Melodically and musically blissful so as to allow for the kind of late-night escapism this song and performance can provide, Rebound is a fine introduction to Daya Midori, and an easy addition to any RnB or soul-pop / trip hop playlists of late. It will be interesting to hear where else the music takes Daya in the coming months.
