David Jane Ambleside EP & Single

Crisp acoustic folk-pop sets the mood beafiuflly, with a voice and melody lightly blending softness and rising anticipation. Canadian singer and songwriter David Jane introduces his new EP Ambleside with a stunning song called Garden Out Back, and its sets the bar perfectly well for the five-song collection.

As an introduction to David Jane, an established artist in his own right, Garden Out Back is a brilliant fusion of indie-pop optimism and fascinating lyrics. We move from acoustic softness to cinematic fullness, all the while captivated by revealing and introspective lyrics. We build towards a hugely uplifting chorus, and the project is already multi-layered but carefully grounded in its sense of artistic focus and reflection. .

Already performing shows and connecting with listeners spanning from Vancouver and Toronto to London, David Jane’s Ambleside EP lays down the story of a transformative year of studying film in Vancouver. The project covers themes of longing, memories, and the unignorable threads between the past and the present.

It’s a raw performance style, meaning you can hear the impact of a live show from the start – the acoustic guitar, the rhythm, the voice, all stripped-back enough to let you know there is talent and a finely honed ability at work. Then it’s purely down to the songs to let Ambleside connect with a timeless charm and appeal, and fortunately, without a doubt, it does.

Conceptually exploring a love story from Ambleside Beach in Vancouver, Ambleside moves into the song Concussion for something a little more evocative and gentle – a drawn-out arrangement, less rhythmically bouncy but perfectly placed for impact in its caring declarations and the higher nuance of David Jane’s versatile yet distinct and genuine voice.

Inspired by all manner of creative media from music and film to literature, philosophy, visual arts and culture at large, David Jane has crafted perhaps his first masterpiece with the realness of this folk-pop storytelling EP. Ambleside is perfectly bookended by two beautifully engaging songs, and holds tightly to your interest and the concept at hand within that.

Concussion builds through euphoric harmonies and an uplifting crescendo, before Five and Dime stylistically lightens the load once more, for a rhythmic acoustic shuffle that’s playful and scenically focused to bring you back down to the ground with vivid imagery and short, snappy lines that linger in the mind.

Another massive chorus makes sure to secure the songwriting strength and passion of David Jane the musician and artist, and this mid-EP highlight slowly but surely becomes a cinematic highlight.

Having already made waves since the 2020 release of his first EP Welcome to Today, Vancouver’s David Jane now turns his voice towards a specific moment and experience, and with it bridges the gap from artist to audience, letting the songs feel both exceedingly revealing and accessible; believably personal in detail but also poetically vague enough to make your own. That balance is key, and David Jane’s music achieves it time and again with Ambleside.

Story Of A Night is a folk-pop anthem designed to lift you up, a celebration that’s an absolute earworm, with a twist of introspective uncertainty from the true Vancouver story, and by now is a classic example of the prowess and scenic storytelling of Canada’s David Jane.

The song is hopeful, and the EP at large leaves you feeling good, calm and capable. The closing song – the title-track – Ambleside – leaves a similar sense of possibility in the air. However, there’s an emotional ache interwoven amidst this, something deeply human and vulnerable in the details and expressions of both this final song and the project at large.

The inspiration for the Ambleside EP openly included the stark awakening of returning to a home that no longer felt like home. The songs are subtle but powerful, and each time you return to them, which is easy to do – thanks to the prestige and precision of the recordings, performances and writing – some new detail shines brightly and unexpectedly; some new reflective insight shedding light on the bigger concept behind Ambleside, and the feelings that led to its conception.

To keep your audience coming back to listen again, and to leave them compelled and interested in some new way every time, is a rare and commendable skill. For this reason in particular, David Jane’s Ambleside EP is a must-hear for 2026 and beyond.
