Driving with a stylish fusion of mildly distorted, soulful electric guitar, and a heavy, anthemic hip hop chorus, Capo Corleone’s Don’t Play is the alternative and passionate hit that indie hip hop deserves.
Blending just enough moments of melody with a choir of vocals, throwing in a hint of Americana amidst a classic rap rhythm and confidence, the single offers a likeable alternative to the repeated loops and synth-pop that back up much of contemporary hip hop.
Featuring more than a few moments of change, multiple vocals and re-directions, always resolving with that satisfying drop to the hook, this track works brilliantly as a hit of energy and creative swagger. It brings together the unity and optimism of hip hop with a notably self-aware musicality that’s likely to appeal to a much broader, unsuspecting audience. Nicely done.
