quartier Congo brings together talents from the Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Belgium, to deliver a mellow whisper of something like world music ambient hip hop, and it introduces the creative originality and atmospheric charm and grooves of Bru-Kin in a way that’s cleverly original.
Mixed with purpose, the levels are as interesting as the instrumental choices, the voices sometimes upfront or whispered, at other times doubled and fast-paced. Meanwhile fragments of guitars, keys, tribal hand drums and programmed rhythms, all meander through the space with graceful, colourful warmth.
It’s an aptly contemporary sound from Bru-Kin, an accompanying video further celebrating the youth culture and movement that inspired the composition, and the final mix is essentially a careful blending of hip hop, electronic and Congolese production and rhythm.
