Bringing things back to the bare essentials, an ever-recognisable Alex Genadnik – otherwise known as Touched By A Song – takes on a 1959 piece by Bulat Okudzhava, and delivers a beautifully acoustic rendition that warms the soul.
Somewhat more brief and minimalist that his recent offerings, KEEP YOUR HEART OPEN draws focus to the simplicity of musicianship, and the unmistakable tone and character of Alex’ voice.
As ever, the natural poetry of this song proves in line with the Alex Genadnik contemplative and heartfelt approach. The English translation works perfectly well, imagery and emotion combined, and the melody is wonderful – simple yet striking, and something of a subtle earworm that settles in for the day.
Whilst not as strictly related to another piece of art or historical context, the introduction of the work of Okudzhava to the many who haven’t yet encountered it, is as thought-provoking and valuable as anything else. The artist and poet was clearly an inspiration to Alex and many others, and as such this song, some additional covers, and even some of his poetry have now effectively made it through to the current scene.
