Composer and artist Adnan Joubran delivers a completely absorbing composition, for this visual and musical ode to longing for an end to the nightmare in Gaza.
Intricately blending a dark, atmospheric overtone, with organic musical inflections and expressions of melody, alongside the haunting sound of children and nature to contrast the clear destruction of the imagery, BEFORE & AFTER is both poignant and eerily optimistic in its portrayal of the suffering.
The composition unites samples of sounds from Gaza’s streets and mosques, prior to the devastation of war, and proceeds to intertwine these aspects of hope and subsequent desperation in a compelling and heart-breaking fashion.
It’s a short but striking composition, important and powerful, evocative and thought provoking, and amongst its political value, it highlights the incomparable comfort of music and art in attempting to translate or encapsulate that which seems so unthinkable to most.
