Meet Boooshman – great to connect with you, and huge congrats for the smooth and sharp EP. For those new to your music, who or what created the spark that first inspired you to make tracks?
Nice to meet you. Thank you. The movie House Party, Kid N Play’s battle rap scene. That’s when I knew I wanted to rap.
What’s the concept or story behind ‘Don’t Get Boomed: Lady Boomers’ – what connects the three tracks within?
The French referring to sex as “The Little Death”. It made me think we die a million times before actually death. For example, how some experience the death of ego or a bad breakup feels like the death of love.
Are you the producer as well as the artist, or do you collaborate? In either case, how do you find the right beats to back your ideas?
I can’t make beats, atleast knew I like to rap to myself lol but I definitely executive producer every song I make.
What’s your lyric writing process like for these stories and songs?
It’s kinda spontaneous. I may write some lines down or concepts I want rap about but I take it to the studio I never know how it’s gonna turn out. Me & my engineer Dez the Genius might throw waroind some ideas too.
There’s a lush instrumental creativity running throughout all three songs on this project, do you play any instruments yourself?
Not at all lol I will play the sax before I die though……………………………………………. or the harmonica or something.
With great music and a minimal social media presence, you’ve amassed an impressive audience. What do you think is the key to connecting with modern listeners?
I think less is more, sometimes. You have to allow space for the music to live. With that being said I will be stepping up my output soon lol
Having grown up between Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Jamaica, your approach and style is naturally diverse. How did this cultural fusion impact your perspective and musicality in the long run?
Both of those neighborhoods have a rich music history. Both of them have heavy Caribbean influence. With the Caribbean day parade in Crown Heights and alot jazz musicians lived in Jamaica Queens. Definitely left an impression on me.
Is live performance an ambition of yours this year, and if so, what will that look like?
Absolutely, that’s apart of the more output I plan on producing. What to see people experience my music in flesh.
You’ve released a multitude of singles and projects over recent years. What keeps you motivated?
“It’s a personal challenge to myself. I’m at constant war with myself and through the song and hymns we come to a peace agreement. That and strip clubs. Strip clubs got some pretty cool music lol.”
What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned about making impactful music and building a career independently?
The biggest lesson is stay true to your path and enjoy every step of the process.
What are the main values you want to bring to alternative hip hop?
I want alternative hip hop to take more chances. Don’t do it like the last person did it. Do it like how you want to do it. It’ll come out more unique that way.
What are your thoughts on the rise of AI-generated music and lyrics?
I’m actually excited for it. I think it will keep us on our toes and force us to be better. I love the competition. May the best MAN win lol
What’s something about you might would surprise fans?
I’m shy lol
Is there anything else we need to know?
Covenant Government is the label that pays me.
