Rising Memphis songwriter Mary Hatley gifts her uniquely expressive and sultry vocals to a full-length album of original songs, with the reflective stories and blues-country grooves of The Poison I Choose.
Featuring top-notch production from Matt Qualls, the music of this project is quick to fill the space, offering a live-band warmth that’s exotic and calming, and which naturally compliments the unmistakable nuance and softly gritty tone of Mary Hatley’s voice and diary-like sentiments.
Offering 12 original songs, the project begins with the catchy looping melody of As Long As You’re Mine, before swinging into a more Lana-like old-school aura and highlight, for the rather wonderful Be My Lover.
The acoustic backdrop reinforces the solo aspect of the album right the way through, and the title-track is a soul-rock Americana highlight for that creative balancing in particular, and wraps up this signature project on a memorable performative high.
