Odd Cadet - This Is Goodbye - Stereo Stickman

Odd Cadet This Is Goodbye

-

Retro electro-funk and synth-wave join forces, for a smooth and gamer-esque array of tones, melodies and vocoder-style effects. Odd Cadet blends the robotic and heartfelt, with This Is Goodbye.

Conceptually rooted amidst the relatable idea of escaping toxicity – despair of a relationship with a narcissist – This Is Goodbye reflects on inner conflict and the struggle to walk away; even when you know you must, there’s often a longing and desire that continues to hold you captive.

These are strictly human qualities and experiences, but they reside in stark contrast to the nostalgic electronica flavours and synths that line the production of this track. The vocals are chopped and toyed with, two resulting sounds adding a kind of back and forth dynamic, and the soundscape flows like waves of industrial rhythm.

Inspired by the likes of Daft Punk, there’s a definite sense of influence to the Odd Cadet sound, and the way this track brings together a sense of meaning and heart with that stylistic intention is easy to listen to.

Melodically the song isn’t particularly memorable, nothing ground-breaking, but the style is quite unique at present, and the creative pathways that Odd Cadet chooses help really build that authenticity.

In addition, the robotic nature of the tune at times feels again quite cleverly connected to this expression of being pulled in different directions. We get into patterns of behaviour, we get used to things, and we fear the void that will follow if we walk away. It’s an interesting take, and ultimately the song speaks on self-worth and believing in better.

A hopeful sound, uplifting when listened to at volume, and with a rewarding twist of possibility woven in to the lyrics.
