myqo - The Longest Chase - Stereo Stickman

myqo The Longest Chase

-

New music from myqo adopts a fully-enveloping, ethereal soundscape – a synth-pop arrangement that naturally lifts the mood, before the song itself dives into a poetic series of images that feel equally dreamlike.

A lyrically uncertain but musically hopeful journey, myqo’s The Longest Chase is a song inspired by the Singaporean poet Adam Tie. The track mysteriously explores the story of a man traversing the vastness of space in search of a lost lover, and does so with a first person perspective; allowing the listener to fully drift away on the implications and lostness of the experience.

Stylistically noting similarities to the likes of Beach House and the ethereal soundscapes of Alvvays, The Longest Chase reads like a poem on paper, yet presents itself by way of light and dreamy vocals, and a rising sense of anticipation to melancholic distortion as things evolve.

The latter half is notably more bold and evocative, a change in tone and weight naturally reinforcing the idea of the endless darkness, anxiety, and loneliness of the lyrics.

However, things settle down for the final fifth – a return to delicacy, but no less of a heart-breaking depth to the storytelling. It’s a devastating ending, but the calm and quiet of the music, the humility and tiredness of the vocal, all counters the impact of this – making it feel like a necessary surrender of sorts, to the unsolvable desperation and ache of searching for someone who can’t be found.
