English-Italian progressive outfit EONIAN have finally released their long-awaited project Pure As Gold – an eight-track alum blending pop and rock across a series of upbeat to intimate stories and vibes that naturally set the mood.
Having already enjoyed the likes of A Better Place and I’m Alive last year, the remaining six tracks complete the arrangement brilliantly – blending professionalism, passion, and talent, with a clear sense of the importance of song order from the moment the title-track begins to play.
Featuring the band’s smooth to gritty leading vocals, Pure as Gold opens things up and brings together a sort of funky soul-pop and rock set-up, with quirky short lines and a naturally catchy resolve that’s easy to connect with.
Lighting up the eclectic playlist later on is the upbeat and uplifting sound of Honey Baby – a track that follows the heartfelt and mellow A Better Place, to help raise the mood and connect for its raspy vocal quality and language fusion. A soulful and engaging song, and an easy highlight from the whole project.
E cerco te is then boldly evocative, layering harmonies and vocals atop a piano lead that feels inspired by the likes of Elton as much so as musical theatre, in a way. The EONIAN sound knows no limits, and Pure As Gold turns out to be the perfect title for encapsulating that truth.
Acoustic guitar and breathy vocals then capture a long-form sense of story and quiet, as Controvento leads with organic passion and rising power, before the soul-rock swagger and addictive groove of The Last Day delivers perhaps the most satisfying and celebratory earworm of the entire album.
Never confined to a single style or expectation, EONIAN write from the heart, and make music that moves and entertains in equal parts. That transparency is what gifts their music something so authentic.
On which note, the closing track, L’impronta del cielo, makes for an unpredictable yet beautifully enthralling final moment. This piano-led performance is intimate to empowering, and connects for its melody and vocal vulnerability, regardless of any perceived language barriers.
EONIAN master the space creatively, with method and freedom carefully intertwined, and Pure as Gold showcases the very best of that approach.
