OIEE Callous

-

Taking its time to build, an other-worldly escapism presented by way of a seemingly minimalist pairing of rise-and-fall synth notes and a classic groove. OIEE’s Callous is all at once an atmospheric, electronic trip hop dream, and a conscious rap story and sentiment that’s provocative and captivating as it rolls along.

Hungarian producer and artist OIEE, whose single Marathon recently debuted on BBC Radio One, has gone from strength to strength as a composer and an expressive, heartfelt modern creative. Seamlessly uniting styles in a subtle but enchanting fashion, his music proves both hypnotic and quite bold by nature, and Callous offers a sublime example of precisely that kind of masterful balance.

Featuring a catchy rhythmic hook that instantly weaves its way into your headspace, the inspiration for Callous is initially quite mysterious. The voice intrigues, but the music works its magic all the more so in between these moments. We get the looping mystique, the fragmented and warped addition, and the ultimate embrace of an after-party rave vibe, all working in unison.

For the mid-section, things get all the more vulnerable – a non-effected, spoken segment, poetic and powerful as it lets the energy and anticipation grow beyond expectation. The lyrics are beautiful, profound and engaging, personal yet relatable, and it’s all of this in unison that makes Callous hit with such an addictive level of depth and connection.

Even the resounding idea, this repeating sense of desperation that is ‘take me home’ quietly repeating as we fall back into the fullness of the production, plays a huge roll in making the track an outright must-hear; and a long-time playlist contender for multiple different genres. This is how real artists make music.
