Uniquely breath-taking poetry and acoustic music lovingly intertwined – South African poet and creative Prince Views compels you to tune in closely, with his fearlessly personal, intimate and engaging take on modern spoken-word and audio escapism.
From the album Sunrise, Butterflies and Goosebumps marks a sublime introduction to the deeply thoughtful, profound and soothing sound of Prince Views. We’re guided by a simple fingerstyle guitar pattern, mellow and with plenty of space surrounding it. We’re then welcomed by a calm and confident leading voice, not rhythmic like rap or even contemporary poetry, but spoken with a certain elegance and artistry that draws true focus to the words and story at hand.
Prince Views is quick to captivate, blending this first-person experience with striking imagery and experiences that draw you further and further into the centre of the story and its inspiration. It’s an individual tale of appreciation and love, the scenes are true to the protagonist only, but the overall emotions and metaphors at work are naturally applicable to any and all journeys through love and this experience that is ‘the loss of self’.
Things soon evolve from simplicity to complexity lyrically, the latter half of the poem offering divine and mighty insight, the final fifth even switching to a piano-lead and a somewhat more bold, unignorable vocal delivery. It’s fascinating, ideas appearing to emerge at a greater speed all of a sudden, and the effect is that you feel as if you may have missed some connecting section or idea. At which point it’s almost essential to replay the track – to recapture these beautiful similes, metaphors, and images, these uniquely artistic reflections on the self and the world at large; before you inevitably venture out into the rest of the Sunrise album.
