Scottish singer and songwriter Luchi continues to expand his repertoire, this month launching the brilliantly catchy new pop single The Other Guy.

We caught up with Luchi to find out how his year is going, how the new song came to be, and what may be in store for the next few months. Here’s the conversation in full.

Hi Luchi – great to catch up with you! How are things?

Hey, yeah I’m doing great, thanks for having me back, excited to chat to you about my new single.

Loving the new single – do you remember where you were when you came up with the melody and lyrics for The Other Guy?

I have a home studio set up so I was in there late at night which is usually the case and it was after an emotionally charged argument with my ex who I just discovered was cheating and lying to me so I’m sure you can imagine it wasn’t a great mood I was in. It kinda just flew out of me as it was exactly what I wanted to say to him which is how most of my songs go, I like to write more of a conversation type song and this one certainly was that. It’s the benefit of having a studio in my flat so that I can jump in and work on songs whenever I like.

Great production on this one – an emotionally loaded set-up – how long was the creative process, and will there also be an acoustic version at some point?

To be honest, it was pretty quick this one. I think it was one of those songs that just took shape and led itself in the direction it needed to go. I usually do a demo for my songs and then send them over to my producer Chris Stagg who then will make them sound much better than I can haha. We had a chat about this song as it could have went in a few different directions, it could have been more melancholy and sad but I wanted the song to have a powerful sound and empowering because it was about finding your worth and not being treated like second best so I think the production suited that.

At the moment, there’s no acoustic version of this song but I would love one day to release a project of my songs reimagined and with different production, because I think that it’s cool to hear a song in different styles so that you can take something different from them.

“The production is so important in the feel and mood of a song that when you change it up, it can take the listener on a different journey, which is cool.”

Do you ever hear back from the people you write your songs about, do you get their feedback ever, or does the song belong to you and your fans at that point?

When it’s about someone in my life currently then usually they have heard the song and I get to hear what they think, but when it’s about my exes or someone who isn’t in my life, tbh, I don’t really look for their feedback. I’m not in contact with my exes ’cause I am a believer in block, delete and move on kind of endings, but I’m sure they have heard them and I always say, I write the songs from my perspective and my interpretation of the situation, theirs might be different, but I can only go from my feelings and interpretation, so once the song is out there, it is for other people to enjoy and relate to and the original story kind of doesn’t matter anymore, because people relate it to their own lives and experiences, which I love.

I never go into too much detail about the person or reveal their names etc but there’s always lines or things in songs that if they listen they will know it’s about them but if their not in my life anymore, I’m not really interested in their opinions.

‘I’m just a chapter while he’s the whole book’ is a great lyric – can you tell us more about what inspired this line?

For me it relates to that I will only be a small part of their story and the next one to come along may be their forever person. It links to the next song of “I guess you were lying when you said you didn’t do love, pretty clear to me I just wasn’t enough” as this guy basically didn’t want to commit to me and just wanted to have me there for when he wanted and didn’t want to give me more.

I deserve to be someone’s whole book because I bring a lot to a relationship and I had to remember my worth and what I deserved. Lucky for me, I’m now in a relationship where I have someone who loves me for me and doesn’t play games with me, so I guess I found my person and had to go through these past relationships to learn my worth and find happiness.

Do you have any plans to perform this season?

I would love to perform these songs live but it’s about finding the right environment at the moment, watch this space.

You’re fast approaching 3k followers on Instagram. What have you noticed has made the biggest impact when building your audience – is it consistency, lots of new songs, clips of a certain song, or vulnerable moments perhaps?

I think it’s hard these days as there is so much music out there, but I think it’s about consistently releasing good music and showing parts of your life and your personality, that’s what I find helps and I enjoy sharing parts of my life with my audience. Because my songs are so emotionally charged, I like to show my fun and light hearted side because it’s not all doom and gloom and emotionally charged all the time in my life, there is light and shade.

Do you have any plans to switch things up creatively or as a performer in 2025?

For me I love to experiment with different sounds and styles and I will always do that because I love all kinds of music. That’s what I love about pop music is I can pull in all different sounds and vary it up a little, sometimes it’s more dance pop, sometimes it’s more rock sounds, full on piano ballads, more cinematic sounding ballads, I just love to try out new sounds so in 2025, I’ll be doing more of that.

What are the main values you’d want new listeners to perceive in you as an artist and songwriter?

I’d want them to think of me as a truthful, honest and vulnerable artist and writer. I wear my heart on my sleeve and it’s been battered around a bit but I really don’t know any other way to be apart from that. I always try to release the best music I can that I think is relatable and I don’t chase trends or what’s in style musically so it’s always going to be just solid songs that I hope stand the test of time and are not just “of the moment songs”

Do you ever think about entering competitions or do you have any experience with that format?

In terms of reality tv competitions, I done a few when I was younger but for me, I don’t really like the lack of control you end up having over your own story and I’ve heard a lot of stories from people who have been involved more than me and it really doesn’t sound like something that I could handle. I mean never say never because they are a great way of exposure but I’d like them to be more focused on artists and writers rather than all the other stuff. There was a show on a few years ago now called Songland and I thought it was really great, it focused on songwriters and the process of crafting songs for other artists so if they brought that kind of thing to UK, I’d definitely be up for that.

Are there more new songs on the way?

Always, I think that I’ll be next year now but I have some great songs to come that I am excited to share. It’s gonna be a fun 2025.

What’s the best way you can describe the music of Luchi for those who haven’t listened yet?

I’d say it’s soulful pop that is vulnerable and honest. It’s hard to pinpoint it down but those are the best ways I can think to describe my music. You’ll always get the truth, you’ll always get the warts and all story of how I feel and it’s focussed on powerful pop vocals and solid production. I hope you agree haha.
