Great vibes and poignant lyrics creatively intertwine, as Afrobeat singer and songwriter Olivier Cheuwa presents the deeply contemplative and self-reflective new single STRANGER.
Musically beautiful in everything from lyric to melody to production, STRANGER already feels like a hit from the moment it starts to play – Cheuwa puts in a calm and captivating performance, short lines backing the strength of the beat in a way that’s naturally catchy. Underneath this, however, a whole new level of story and depth emerges – a song that openly explores the complexities of loneliness and feeling like an outsider both abroad and at home.
STRANGER is an addictive summer anthem on the surface, with a Gospel to World-music style choir of vocals adding another infectious element to an already engaging indie hit. At its core though, the song is compelling to listen to and consider – the writing is original, the verses unique and intriguing, and all the while Cheuwa makes sure to wrap up this uncertainty with a clear and concise hook.
That moment grounds things within the mainstream pop realm, and all the while the colourful set-up, the fine use of contrast, and the conceptual shadows of thought, all lights up the underground approach in a memorable way.
Beautifully done, another favourite for the summer.
