Aptly-timed to kick off the new year with retro good vibes and an inescapably catchy tune, Doc Jazz returns with the infectious and nostalgic yet contemporary-themed Friendzone.
Blending aspects of classic dance – vintage synth sounds and vocal effects, a familiar up-tempo rhythm and plenty of production – with a notably eighties-esque vocal melody and overall finish, Friendzone makes fine use of instrumental licks to weave its memorable web. On top of this we get that vocal-line, the most nostalgic aspect, perhaps, for its nod back to the bands and acts of a simpler era.
Subject matter makes for a familiar trait but one that ultimately connects the past to the present. The song’s defiant sense of optimism musically is in no way deflated by the concept, and also, the lyrics themselves focus far more on hope and positive action – the idea is to get out of the friendzone, or indeed to celebrate oneself and declare that it’s the other participant who will be swamped with regret in the years to come.
It’s a fun song, in short – easy to listen to, offering a lightness and addictive groove combined – nothing about the set-up or lyricism takes itself too seriously. Having said that, there’s a clear contemplation to the writing, and that realism helps bridge the gap between artist and audience.
Always mixing things up creatively, Doc Jazz maintains a subtle edge of unpredictability with Friend Zone. Nicely done.
