For what opens up as a very raw, organic, acoustic performance of a well known classic – enjoyable, but minimal – this remake from Australian duo Azmosphere explodes into something completely unpredictable and stylishly enchanting.
This somewhat outspoken meeting of the acoustic world and the electronic is something that is not commonly attempted, or if it is, it perhaps has a tendency to fall flat on its face. This couldn’t be further from the truth in this case. The gradual unfolding of this insanely unique soundscape is captivating, and gradual is perhaps the first word of importance – the band’s underlying musical style is not something that screams for attention the second you press play. The evolution is an artistic process and this is something that’s underlined more and more as the piece moves along.
The instrumentation that follows takes a touch of inspiration from classic, even retro electronica, a deeply soulful and mellow rhythm takes hold, a slightly native sounding riff bounces around in the backdrop, and the leading vocals move from the completely bare, up close and personal, to the reverb soaked, atmospheric and dreamlike – as if the band’s name didn’t drop the hint enough.
This release genuinely comes as a compelling and welcome discovery. It’s something of a surprise in how it develops over the four and a half minute time scale, a strong representation of what can be achieved when talent and professionalism successfully fuse with creative freedom – a drive to express something fresh, an ear for possibility, and a love for, quite simply, making music. The initial drop at precisely one minute into the song is inspired. What follows is a hypnotic and impeccably original take on an absolute classic.
A stand up release with so much individuality and still a rightful nod to the initial essence and style of the song from way back when; the perfect combination. Well worth a listen – turn it up loud.
