Readapting the 1981 queer anthem that was Homosapien, by Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks, the unmistakable Ladonna Rama settles into the groove with a natural air of connection and colour.
Featuring a classic electro rhythm and warmth with numerous changes in direction, Ladonna’s vocals pave the way with perhaps the most melodic versatility yet across a plethora of releases. The sudden brightness of the hook suits the voice, placing it in a new realm, a little more pop anthem then elsewhere.
The contrast between the simple pulse of the verse, the bass and the easy back and forth lyrically, and the ultimate uplift of the hook, works well even despite a dash of displacement the first time around.
The second hook feels much more organic, the electric guitar oozing through with swagger and adding plenty to the overall mood.
By the final minute, the whole thing has woven its web, feeling like a worthy ode or indeed a fresh track celebratory of modern queerness for those unfamiliar with the eighties release.
