Australia’s echolily takes the time to craft something immersive and meaningful with this latest, engaging and impressively cinematic new release.
Building up for over a minute initially, from delicate whispers of potential through a wholly ambient, warm and dreamy trip-hop realm, undertheclocks (stay) soon evolves to become a notably soulful exploration of intimacy and longing.
The weight of the bass and the creative, intermittent nature of the rhythm, effectively juxtapose the softness and emotion of the voice and the lyrics, to create a subtle and rather minimal arena of sound – a level of implied vastness, which embraces the listener beautifully when played at volume.
Bringing back a hint of simpler times – the Morcheeba and Portishead days, the delicate side of Massive Attack – echolily blends yesteryear and contemporary sound-design throughout the song’s four-minute-ten-second lifespan. The final quarter in particular sees things get all the more experimental, a little unpredictable – yet always this is in keeping with the calming mood and the inspiring, hypnotic aura of the original set-up.
