Fusing the singer-songwriter purity and doubled vocals of Elliott Smith, with a Bon Iver level of delicacy, and a Passenger-inspired poetic optimism, Jameel Farruk quickly manages to melt the heart and calm the soul with this single.
The Lost Ones creates a blissfully organic and softly rhythmic soundscape around its audience – enveloping the listener, then proceeding to whisper these beautifully uplifting thoughts and reflections on life. Imagery and emotion meet to compelling results, and with that Farruk’s voice proves equally captivating as it meanders through this stunning long-form melody and story.
While the song starts off as more than good – beautifully natural, thoughtful and new, accessible and flawlessly performed – it evolves to move straight up into the realms of great and greater than. The rise to the hook changes the mood in the room significantly, and outlines Farruk as far more of a passionate and powerful singer than the quieter introduction seems to imply. Then you get this completely unexpected instrumental moment, bringing things to a multi-layered finish – these retro synths and details rain down to end the experience in a hypnotic and ultimately memorable way. An absolute pleasure to stumble upon – I look forward to hearing more.
