This slice of exuberant, unashamedly pop-tastic insanity comes courtesy of a clutch of 80s synth sounds and a very clever arrangement that somehow boots the retro-ness of its experience into a thoroughly enjoyable romp for right now!
This is no simple pop-fluff, though – don’t be fooled, there’s a sophisticated arrangement hiding behind the bubblegum and technicolour – and it keeps both the narrative and the interest chopping along as the track progresses. Couple that with an imaginative mix of vocals to back up lead singer Glenn Jost’s excitable lead vocal and you realise that we’ve got some classy musicians at work on Fly Away.
The tonal shifts within the piece create both dream-like and manic musical states within the backing track, as rhythmic and genre changes are subtly folded into the tight pop arrangement. Particularly effective are two deviations from the verse and chorus patterns. The first is an exploration of the uplifting lyric, ‘anything is possible’ over frantic acoustic guitar and wildly ad-libbing female vocals. From there we go into a knowingly-naked synth trumpet solo that exhibits a tongue-in-cheek joie de vivre that could either be seen as a nod to Fly Away’s dream-state wackiness or to wantonly selecting cheesy 80s sounds to solo with… because they can!
From there we go into a half-time part with the sweetly-sung, ‘now I lay me down to sleep…’ and then into a broken down final verse with handclaps…
It should be noted that there’s a complementary video to go with the song, as full of homespun charm and cartoonish visuals as you might expect, but I wouldn’t want that to detract from the proper skill that the awkwardly-monikered ReLoVe are showing us with this song.
Way-To-Go Glenn Jost !!!
Great Energy
Keep’em Coming
