A hypnotic, pulsing, rolling piano motif welcomes in the listener, then the rubber hits the road and we’re off!
It’s a clever, classy and contemporary sound, with pristinely-captured vocals (as precise as you like) treated lovingly with compression, reverb and delay. It neatly draws the ear to focus on the main lyrical hooks, like ‘take me for a drive’ – a pleasing re-mix of a title that never appears in the lyric of Car Solutions.
The backing, using further driving, hypnosis-inducing tropes like four-on-the-floor kick drum interspersed with drum machine hand-claps, is a classy affair, with the piano motif weaving in and out of the arrangement to lead us, via reverse cymbals, back to the sung melody. When the melody is busy, the rhythm sits back, and when it’s simpler the rhythm focuses on drive. This dynamic relationship all adds to the slightly woozy, trippy production values that have been realised here.
It’s very easy to imagine this song being synced with a Lloyd’s Bank commercial (more so than the obvious car-related expectation) because of the rolling nature of the piano and its potential synergy with Lloyd’s slow-mo galloping horse imagery – it has that kind of energised, uplifting vibe that’s also somewhat pensive – a flavour favoured by that kind of institution.
In fact, Piper has made a video, which heavily features a car – which sync do you think is a better fit? Be quick, though, the whole caboodle is over in less than two and a half minutes! It whips along even faster, thanks to clever use of repeated vocal phrases and a clean and clipped vocal delivery that is insistent, vital, and has the power to captivate.
