DRussell goes hard musically and conceptually on this latest release. Reminiscing is a contemporary hip hop anthem that’s fairly unforgettable once it’s hit the airwaves around you.
What begins as a unique and ambient soundscape, dark and intriguing, mysterious and appealing for its delicate aura, soon evolves to become a rhythmically memorable rap hit with a surprisingly complex structure. The whole thing continues to throw in curve-balls whenever you get complacent, so while there are undoubtedly threads that connect the experience and make it recognizable, there’s also plenty that you’re unlikely to expect.
There’s a change in pace towards the end, there’s a sense of depth in the very sentiment of what it is to reminisce, and there’s a striking level of contrast throughout between the somewhat oriental tones in the distance and the thick, industrial-style drum-line that keeps things moving along.
At the same time as all of this, DRussell’s performance pours through soaked in passion and confidence. You don’t question the weight or strength of the bars or the vocal delivery, you can hear the intention and power behind it all, and this again contrasts with that somewhat gentle nature of the cinematic soundscape in the distance. A single listen is all you really need for the track to leave its mark.
