Madame Psychosis lead with the raw energy of indie rock and the accessible, memorable melodies of pop on their latest single Just Wanna Be Myself. More than this though, there’s a genuine air of honesty that runs throughout their songwriting – the very title implies it, and what you find within is everything those four words promise. The song is an anthem for the introverts and misfits. It’s musically pure – not trying to be anything other than what it is; which reinforces brilliantly the very sentiment at the heart of the writing.
What I like about this song is that it’s something of a grower. A gentle beginning lays bare the lyrics and seems fairly familiar, but as things evolve – the band rise in passion and energy; the instrumentation and the performances across the board build and build. The band’s leading vocalist moves from the quietness of the opening verse to the full-throttle swagger of that final hook with seemingly effortless grace. It’s not just the sound of the voice, it’s the changing expressions and the performance in general – as can be enjoyed in the song’s accompanying video. Along with this comes an authentic insight as to what the band would be like in a live-show setting – something that will likely allow songs of this nature to connect with an audience all the more boldly.
Madame Psychosis do their own thing, it’s what comes naturally, and this song is one that gets better and better with each revisit.
