The Highlands Project - Congo Square - Stereo Stickman

The Highlands Project Congo Square

-

Great vibes in strong supply rain down instrumentally, a kind of soul-rock and funk shuffle of a groove that’s organic and infectious. Then we get the shift to the vocal lead, unexpected given the instrumental fullness and optimism in itself, but a welcomed twist of story and confidence to help light up the rest of the progression…

This is the new release from a compelling The Highlands Project, a Sky Canyon and Robert M Powell collaboration. It’s a cover of the classic song Congo Square – written by Sonny Landreth and brought to fame by The Neville Brothers – and it brings forth a timeless appreciation for jazz, funk, soul and the sheer joy of live music.

As the vocal starts up there’s a hint of nostalgic influence from The Beatles, but it’s admittedly brief – we soon evolve into a notably more soulful, smooth and conceptually immersive style.

The full five-minute composition works beautifully amidst this, making plenty of time and space for instrumental swagger and charm – guitar solos and horn sections a-plenty, but always in keeping with the energic undertones, which, quite simply, make you keen to let loose and dance the night away.

Brilliant music, I look forward to hearing more.
