Taiwan’s sykii blends the atmospheric nostalgia of electronic trip-hop and lo-fi production, with mellow but sharp, smart bars, and a distinct vocal tone that naturally helps set the sound apart.
Paramount is a fine introduction to the style, encapsulating an approach driven by equal parts confidence, creative freedom, and heartfelt intention. The track wanders dreamily through the airwaves, offering a modest fusion of genres, whilst laying down the foundations for a storyteller and performer clearly inspired by a wide range of creative outlets.
Following on from her 2024 EP Blaze, Paramount secures the recognisable tone and writing of sykii, and in the same instance offers a timeless, easy listen, which is softly impassioned but immersive in calming the space.
The result is something that mildly nods its head to the dawn of UK garage and even boom bap, but essentially marches to the beat of its own laid-back and hopeful drum. The bars are interesting, the vocal unmistakable, and the music is an easy pleasure to let play.
