One of the most instantly recognisable acoustic blues guitar riffs, elevated all the more so by one of music history’s most iconic songwriters – Tracy Chapman’s Give Me One Reason is a personal favourite from the legendary artist, and a swinging celebration of the more upbeat grooves and good vibes that came through from the infamous Fast Car composer.
Here we get a welcomed ode to the classic song, Ontario artist Shar paying honest tribute to Chapman and this single, with a cover that holds closely to the original groove and flow of the song, whilst offering a clear twist of identity in the vocal styling and softness.
It’s a humble and accurate depiction of a track that has undoubtedly stood the test of time, and it makes fine use of everything that first lit up the airwaves for the release – the hooky melody, the strong riff, the electric guitar solo, the call-and-response support vocals.
Shar’s honouring of Chapman resounds beautifully, no doubt impressing all the more so in the live setting, and this is easily one of the more respectful and well-imitated covers to hit the scene in quite some time. Shar ignites the natural fluidity and warmth of the song with confidence and skill, and the results work their magic with ease.
