Piano-led indie pop and breathy vocals depict a contemporary sense of influence amidst a poetic and personal style of writing. Argentinian artist Pilar Victoria, now based in Texas, rises up from intimate and acoustic to anthemic and bold, with the increasingly likable single Headphones.
Taking subtle inspiration from the rise of contrast amidst artists with softer voices and bigger productions to their sound – think Billie, Lana – but also quite quickly asserting her own vocal style and lyrical realness, Pilar Victoria reflects with honesty and optimism in the end; presenting a song that feels deeply personal yet also broadly relatable for its poetic vagueness and the clear emotional vulnerability that draws you in.
The song is an easy hit at its peak, resolving well to this title idea of putting her headphones on – and to the subsequent subtlety of the guitar line. The whole thing is over far too quickly, in my opinion, but it’s always better to leave your fans wanting more than to outstay your welcome. I look forward to the next single.
