Dreamy jazz-kissed pop and rock with a refreshing twist of artistic delicacy at the helm – Miami creatives Nuclear Monkey capture a likable set of grooves and reflections, with their softly uplifting new album Hello Again.
Self-described as Jazz-Rock, the project features a strong sense of unity between musical layers, and introduces quiet to nearly-whispered vocals at the forefront, to lead with a kind of surf-rock meets shoe-gaze sense of ethereal calm and escapism. Subtle warping and humble solos further the artistic edge of all of this, and showcase a band that have no doubt mastered the live space as an expressively intertwined outfit.
From Caroline through Outlaws the vibe is muggy but colourful, the mood mellow to uplifting – excitable but modest. Think Mac DeMarco but with a twist of the indie rock bands of a more nostalgic era.
In short, Hello Again is a smooth and experimental but structurally sound collection of originals, and it introduces the playful yet precise abilities of Nuclear Monkey in a likable and rather timeless way.
