Energising synth-wave finely crafted around an evocative to euphoric chord progression – producer and artist Modfrey delivers an impeccable debut, with the immersive sound-design and subtle conceptualisation of SELLOUT v2.
Built around a fully engaging opening production, SELLOUT v2 makes fine use of both rhythmic intention and melodic distinction. That is to say, the instrumental alone is all at once enveloping and tunefully recognisable. This is before we even get to the subtle voice and concept. We’re in a kind of M83 realm, only it feels uniquely organic – something like guitars and keys, a recognisable leading riff, a changing level of energy that sweeps you off your feet.
The sound is likable from the offset, and fairly timeless. Then we get this lightly whispered, tired and angst-ridden voice – reflecting with scorn upon the process of becoming a sellout; suddenly choosing to write disingenuously, to make the most of an existing audience regardless of how authentic the music may be.
We hear fragments of anger, gritty reflections and ideas, but otherwise it’s the music that takes precedence – which is actually a brilliant encapsulation of the very concept at hand. The voice of conscience is quiet, taking a backseat over the stylistic requirements of a mainstream audience. The lyrics are nearly silent echoes amidst an otherwise celebratory instrumental wave of music.
Modfrey’s aim is to highlight the fact that top-quality creative pursuit and honesty will always lead to a more fulfilling career and lifestyle over anything purely chasing a viral moment. Fortunately, the sound of SELLOUT v2 speaks volumes on behalf of both talent and purpose in that regard.
