Lifelong musician and songwriter Josh Rifkin celebrates the beauty of nostalgia in line with contemporary reflection. His latest album Lancaster Road is an organic and distinct sounding project, loaded with stories and melodies that quickly help pave the way back towards the comfort of the past.
Beginning with the catchy and soulful Save it For The Morning, this album is clearly far from the usual folk-Americana ode to simpler times. There’s an upbeat energy and something fairly stylish and characterful to the vocal lead and storytelling. Always the song resolves to a smooth and memorable hook, but the verses and musicianship that guide us are refreshingly interesting, and that makes for a strong beginning to this project.
Josh Rifkin continues to connect, with versatility in both mood and subject matter. The title-tack Lancaster Road is more of an easy indie anthem, a gentler presentation with plenty of space, and lyrical scenes that draw you in which each new line.
Lancaster Road is a humble ode to effective and interesting songwriting, in my view – a pleasant collection, non-intrusive but enjoyable and professionally crafted. The album is also brilliantly organic and genuine – a quality that always rings loud amidst the otherwise electronic ocean of today. “Take me back, I want to go back there” echoes out into the space; a deeply personal wonder but one that’s easy to make your own as the music rains down.
