Cascading keys of a fast-paced neo-classical aura guide listeners through the inescapable grip of nostalgic, cleanly-crafted drum and bass – Austrian producer God-Rick is a self-defined newcomer to the game, but the precision and passion of this release is nothing short of a superb introduction to his sound.
Somewhat brief but easily recognisable within that, Bullets employs a distinct electronic riff – a downpour of notes that fall in waves of intensity, as we move towards the ferocity and weight of this unignorable DnB drumline.
The intensity builds further still, the hit of each programmed drum unique in everything from tone to distortion and presence within the mix, and alongside this, contrast is masterfully utilised. From the quiet piano moments to those that feature every familiar layer in unison, Bullets presents a sense of euphoric urgency that’s not unlike the cinematic implications of its title. These Bullets rain down – unsettling excitement to a degree – and despite its short life-span, the track manages to hit with unignorable impact; leaving its mark in a way that most contemporary electronic releases simply fail to do.
Other sublime highlights from the growing God-Rick repertoire include his previous single Crying in the Rain – similar intensity and juxtaposed moments for impact, with a soulful and fairly world-music-inspired vocal melody at the forefront for dynamic.
Then on the flip-side, Dark Habits is brilliantly unique once again, the same fast-fingered melodic prowess as Bullets, but with a whole new set-up and audio story that’s unique and mildly retro in expanding the creative appeal of God-Rick.
