Brilliantly impressive and original hip hop meets with unrivaled artistry, as giveuppulp is quick to overcome the simpler angsty implications of the title of PRETTY FUCKIN SHAMBLES.
Featuring ethereal production and an addictively rhythmic vocal flow, short lines and deeply poetic contemplations, PRETTY FUCKIN SHAMBLES is infectious – catchy in a whole new way, uniquely melodic and moving, and introduces giveuppulp in a manner that will no doubt allow all future releases, however eclectic, to ring loud from this corner of creative identity.
For me, the flow and performative, evocative delivery feels reminiscent of indie legends like Grieves, breathy and thoughtful, poetic and fearlessly revealing on a personal level. The bars captivate, in short, for both their originality and the clearly passionate core that drives them.
Alongside this we get a warped arrangement of light rhythm and striking synths redirecting things – distortion and delicacy intertwining throughout a dreamlike, aptly chaotic sense of lostness. It’s a soundscape that rightfully reflects the downward spiral of our protagonist’s own mindset and mental health in relaying these scenes and feelings. The final fifth even switches gears entirely for a gentle choir-like reflection of calm and soulful longing that again surprises.
Bars for miles but not that sheer confident and quirky kind, more the profoundly thoughtful, fearlessly gritty, scornful and painfully relatable. giveuppulp is onto something impressive with this approach to modern rap, and PRETTY FUCKIN SHAMBLES is an easy breakthrough from that.
