Norwegian three-piece GISKE capture an organic folk-pop sound loaded with warmth in both imagery and musicality. Light Upon The Water is every bit as hopeful and uplifting as its title and artwork imply, and the music grows all the more beautiful as things progress.
From humble beginnings, the band set-up an unplugged folk arrangement of natural guitars and an easy rhythm. The leading voice is accessible and mildly distinct, and is later joined by a female voice, for unexpected dynamic.
That dynamic aspect continues to evolve, the music brightening further, electric guitar adding a touch of soulful uncertainty, and the lyrics and melodic shift furthering that twist of something like melancholy. Ultimately though, the humanity and heart of the song resounds, and the track is gifted space to let both the vocal guidance and the instrumental alone work their magic intermittently – and, of course, gorgeously as one.
A wonderful single, and a fine introduction to the thoughtful poetic songwriting and imagery of GISKE, and indeed their cleanly mixed, authentic live sound; which no doubt impresses all the more memorably in the live setting.
