Eddie Wang’s sublimely expressive and heartfelt vocals guide with warmth and intimacy, as his new single I Still Want You delves into the relatable ache of continuing to love someone even when they’ve hurt you.
Renowned for his consistently elegant and honest approach to making music, Eddie Wang brings a distinctly genuine lyrical backbone to the piano-led pop format, creating a nostalgic and catchy listen that’s both painful and accessible in its realism.
Rising up from simple beginnings, Eddie’s voice connects first amidst the humility of keys and a timeless but mellow rhythm. The opening line – ‘It’s been two months and I still feel numb, I think about what I should have done…’ reaches out with the desparation and longing of a broken hearted lover.
Then as things evolve, we reach a bright and beautiful chorus – perhaps one of Eddie’s most melodically memorable yet. The lines are snappy, poetic and poignant, the tune simultaneously rising and falling like waves of reflection; a natural earworm alongside the gentle ambiance of the music.
Things get all the more revealing as the song goes on, the soundscape grows to include multiple layers of keys, synths, rhythm, vocals, and bass, even leaning towards a kind of eighties pop aura in the end. Ultimately though, the juxtaposed brightness of the chorus takes precedent. It’s not often we hear this kind of huge celebration of scorn – a wishful protagonist with whom we empathise but also hope can move on and find better. ‘You can break my heart again, even if it makes me bleed, as long as you come back to me.’
As always, Eddie Wang refuses to adhere to expectation, and instead remains a songwriter exploring the darker depths and nuances of the human experience. Here we note the emptiness that ensues when love is lost, when even though we’re better off without the hurt, the sense of life and electricity from that experience seems irreplaceable.
