From his brand new project The Adagios, Adagio Five is a stunning introduction to a new chapter of the limitless creative production of David Ratmoko. The Swiss composer has made waves throughout 2024, with his consistently unpredictable yet immersive intertwining of classical music and contemporary dance and hip hop. His breadth of influence is unrivalled, and the cinematic weight and melodic euphoria of Adagio Five appears to perfectly encapsulate that strength of identity and artistic flair.
Initially somewhat mellow in comparison to his other works, there’s an eighties-esque drama to the tumbling distant drums and retro keys of Adagio Five, along with a sense of clearly rising anticipation that’s only ever mildly established for each drop. The drums gather clear momentum, the melody meanders in a film-like, nostalgic but original way, and still we find ourselves floating through the airwaves amidst this divine balancing of delicacy and unresolved longing.
The closing moments of Adagio Five bring a new set of emotions, Ratmoko exercising his ability to both compose and produce music that connects and allows for the most alluring and gripping sense of escapism.
The Adagios as a completed project builds further on these qualities, attaching its demeanour to certain emotions and ideas unique to each listener, whilst humbly portraying the genre-fusion and fearless creativity that is the beating heart of all things David Ratmoko.
